Recently I did a word study from the Strong’s Concordance on the Beatitudes out of Matthew Chapter 5.  Here are my notes.  The words in bold are the scripture quotes; the numbers in brackets are the Strong’s reference numbers; and the words following the numbers are the meanings of the previous words as taken from the Strong’s.   This enhances the reading of the Word for me.  I hope it does the same for you.  If you would like to hear the Beatitudes read from the Message version of the Bible, you can click HERE for the audio entitled We are Blessed – Matthew 5.

 Matt 5:3

Blessed [3107 – happy] are the poor [4434 – those conscious of their spiritual need ] in spirit [4151 – the seat of power, affection, emotion, desire = soul] for theirs is the kingdom [932 – the royal power, kingship, dominion, rule] of Heaven [3772 – the region and seat of order where God dwells].

 Matt 5:4

Blessed [3107 – happy] are they that mourn [3996 – lament, bewail] for they shall be comforted [3870 – to console, encourage, strengthen, instruct, teach, admonish, instruct].

 Matt 5:5

Blessed  [3107 – happy] are the meek [4239 – mildness of disposition, gentleness of spirit.]  for they  shall inherit [2816 – obtain by right of inheritance, to become a partaker of] the earth [1093 – the earth as opposed to the Heavens, the inhabited earth, the abode of men and animals.]

Notes:     Meekness toward God is that disposition of spirit in which we accept His dealings with us as good, and  therefore without disputing or resisting. In the OT, the meek are those wholly relying on God rather than their own strength to defend against injustice. Thus, meekness toward evil people means knowing God  is permitting the injuries they inflict, that He is using them to purify His elect, and that He will deliver His elect in His time (Isa 41:17, Luke 18:1-8). Gentleness or meekness is the opposite of self-assertiveness  and self-interest. It stems from trust in God’s goodness and control over the situation. The gentle  person is not occupied with self at all. This is a work of the Holy Spirit, not of the human will (Gal 5:23).]

 Matt 5:6

Blessed [3107 – happy] are they which do hunger [to be hungry, to suffer want or be needy, to crave ardently, to seek with eager desire] and thirst [1372 – suffer from thirst, figuratively, those who are said to thirst who painfully feel their want of, and eagerly long for, those things by which the SOUL is refreshed, supported, and strengthened] after righteousness [1343 – the condition acceptable to God, the way by which man may attain a state of approval of God] for they shall be filled [5526 – to fill or satisfy the desire of anyone].

Matt 5:7

Blessed  [3107 – happy] are the merciful [1655 – those filled with mercy] for they shall obtain mercy [1653 – to feel sympathy with the misery of another, esp. such sympathy as manifests itself in act, less frequently in word]

Matt 5:8

Blessed [3107 – happy] are the pure [2513 – purified by fire, like a vine cleansed by pruning and so fitted to bear fruit, those free from corrupt desire, from sin and guilt, free from a mixture of what is false, sincere, genuine, blameless, innocent, unstained with the guilt of anything] in heart [2588 – that which denotes the center of all physical and spiritual life, the SOUL, MIND, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes, endeavors, the understanding – the faculty and seat of intelligence, the WILL and character] for they shall see [3700 –  to look at, behold] God.

Matt 5:9

Blessed [3107 – happy] are the peacemakers [1518 – one who loves peace] for they shall be called 2564 – receive the name of] the children [5207 – a son, a descendant, used to describe those who are born again, those whom God esteems as sons, whom He loves, protects and benefits above others, those whose character God, as a loving Father, shapes by chastisements, those who revere God as their Father, those who in character and life resemble God, those who are governed by the Spirit of God, those who are united to Him in affectionate intimacy, privy to His saving councils, obedient to the Father’s WILL in all His acts] of God.

Matt 5:10

Blessed [3107 – happy] are they which are persecuted [1377 – those who are harassed, troubled, molested, mistreated, who suffer persecution on account of something] for righteousness’ sake [1343 – for integrity, virtue, purity of life, rightness, correctness of thinking, feeling or acting] for theirs is the kingdom [932 – the royal power, kingship, dominion, rule] of heaven [3772 – the region and seat of order where God dwells]..

Matt 5:11

Blessed [3107 happy] – are you when men shall revile [3679 – reproach, unbraid, to cast favors received in one’s teeth] you and persecute [1377 – to put you to flight, drive you away, to pursue you in a hostile maker, trouble or molest you] and shall say all manner of evil [4190 – wicked, bad, bringing toils, annoyances or perils on you, causing pain and trouble] against you falsely [5574 – speaking a deliberate falsehood, to deceive one by a lie] for My sake [1752 – on account of or for the sake of].

Matt 5:12

Rejoice [5463 – be glad, be well, and thrive] and be exceeding glad for great [4183 – many, much and large] is your reward [3408 – dues paid for work, wages, the rewards which God bestows, or will bestow, upon good deeds and endeavors] in Heaven, for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
