Wayne and Barbara Day are true friends of ours and of Places In The Father’s Heart.  Wayne and “B” were some of the very first who recognized the call of God upon our lives and acted to help us get the ministry organized and our non-profit status secured. Wayne served as ministry Vice President for 20 years.  They have remained faithful partners with us since 1982 and we likely would not be where we are today without them in our lives.

There is a lie so demonically destructive that it has literally rewritten the history of the world, and yet this lie is so entrenched in Christian thinking that it’s rarely questioned. In fact, most believers have heard the lie so many times that they actually assume it’s a verse in the Bible. It kind of reminds me of one of my mother’s famous sayings, “God helps those who help themselves.” She repeated it so often that I was shocked when I started following Jesus, read the entire Bible and couldn’t find that verse anywhere. In fact I found the Bible to be quite the opposite of my mother’s mistaken understanding. I discovered that God helps those who can’t help themselves, won’t help themselves and who don’t know how to help themselves!

One evening Denise and I were sitting at the table after dinner and she was sharing a story with me—a story that was quite painful. As she shared she began to cry. After a few minutes she looked down and saw that one of her tears had fallen on the table and she remarked, “There’s another tear that needs to go into the Lord’s bottle.” She then commented, “I hope that the ‘bottle of tears’ gets tipped when it’s full just as the ‘bowl of prayers’ do.” I then responded with, “I’m not sure that you can tell the difference between the two.” Sometimes when you share something, you have a sense that what you’ve said has more behind it then just your own thoughts or ideas. Anytime I picture what courage looks like I think of soldiers, public servants and superheroes. But one thing I know for sure is that courage isn’t contained to a profession or a personality type. Courage comes from knowing that the God of the universe is for us and in us! Whether you’re a teacher, a stay-at-home mom, a photographer or a businessman, you are one of God’s champions! And as his winners, we weren’t called to sit around the palace sipping suds and polishing our armor. We have been left behind to transform the world.

When we think about the word correction, what thoughts, what emotions come up? Are they positive or negative? For many of us this word represents negative past experience. Therefore, it should be avoided if at all possible. The range and power of individual response can be huge and sometimes difficult to overcome without help and healing. In our flesh we want to push the issues away and avoidance seems to be a pathway of least resistance and a quick escape from the pressure of potential confrontation. This is flesh and if we continue to use avoidance, escape and denial we remain in bondage in our flesh and hinder our future and our potential in God. Are you empathetic to other people’s concerns and pain? Should you be?

I recently was reflecting on this issue and my own behavior. As you can imagine, empathy is valued by Counselors and the people they help. It is necessary for me to empathize with my clients. I must understand the client’s thoughts and connect with their feelings in order to best serve them. Empathy has also become a new buzz word in leadership circles. The assumption is if you can truly understand others you can better lead them. Leadership guru and Sociologist Brene Brown, references the following four attributes of empathy:

1) To be able to see the world as others see it – putting your own “stuff” aside to see the situation from their eyes.
2) To be non-judgmental – judgment of the other person discounts their experience.

This title came in a flash while I was watching TV. The neon lights came on and captured my attention. I love it when the Holy Spirit does things like that! As I pondered the phrase, I began to realize that when Jesus invaded my space and saved me He was rescuing me from myself. Who was driving my bus? Self was driving my bus and it was out of control heading for a cliff and more hell than I had already lived!

Is it possible to walk through pain and come out the other side really okay? Yes. Is it easy? No. Is it worth it? Most definitely. Jesus said, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4). In other words, mourning is necessary; it’s the process that leads to wholeness. Yet many Christians are afraid of pain and believe their only responsibilities are to cheer people up. Consequently, hurting people push down their pain instead of confronting it. This leads to a life of unresolved agony. As children of God, we must learn how to walk away from pain (not hide it), so that we can become healthy and whole people who live joyful lives.
