This is a devotional by Brittney Johnson written in memory of her Daddy, Tommie Lee Horsley,
who went to Heaven February 23, 2011.
Don’t be scared, you can do this!
Sitting in your lap I could barely see over the rail. Looking through your scope I set my sights on what was fixing to be my very first deer. I remember so clearly hearing you whisper…”don’t be scared, you can do this.” The look on his face afterwards was amazing…my Daddy was proud of me!
Years later I was staring into a tiny mirror at the church, when Daddy knocked on the door. He walked in and began to cry, “my baby isn’t a baby anymore, but you sure make a beautiful bride sweetheart.” I hugged his neck so tight, heart beating like crazy, and that’s when he whispered to me, “don’t be scared, you can do this.” He walked me down the isle that day and gave me away.
Little did I know, five short years later, I would find myself waking up on the floor of the ICU waiting room. It had been a long three weeks. The doctor walked in and told us there wasn’t anything else they could do for you. My heart was broken. All of the memories we had built started playing like a movie through my head. As I walked into your room, I took your hand. I leaned in close and kissed your cheek, and whispered to you…”don’t be scared, you can do this.” Not long after, my Daddy took his last breath.
Monday will make four years since he made his journey home, and not a day passes that I don’t think about being that little girl sitting on his knee…That smile still melts my heart! Even though it’s tough, I rejoice for him. You see, my Daddy loved The Lord with all his heart, and now he is able to stand along side Him everyday! What an honor that must be to walk with the one who created the heavens and the earth!
Even though his little girl isn’t so little anymore, I will carry his words with me forever…”Love The Lord and live for Him always, and darling when life gets hard, don’t be scared, you can do this!”
Proverbs 3:5-6
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will guide your path.”
