I recently heard someone say that this life on earth is the only place we will ever get to worship God in the middle of a storm.

And I haven’t stopped thinking about it.

Because one day, there will be no storms.  No grief.  No fear.  No anxiety.  No unanswered prayers.  No wondering where God is.

\We will be with Him.

We will see Him.

But here, we don’t always see Him.

Here, sometimes we worship while our hearts are breaking.  Sometimes we say, “God, I trust You,” while every feeling inside of us is screaming that we shouldn’t.

Sometimes we search for Him in the storm because, if we’re honest, He feels incredibly hard to find.

And I don’t think that means our faith is failing.  I think there is something incredibly sacred about choosing Him there.

Sometimes following Jesus can take you directly into the heart of a storm – into the heart of hopelessness. That’s what happened to Jesus’ disciples on the Sea of Galilee. They were simply doing what they had been told to do and wound up in one of the worst nights of their lives. We read, “Immediately He made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side …” (Matthew 14:22).

Spirit of the Living God,

warm me and soften me and draw me near;

grow love where there is contempt in me;

grow joy when I am dull and despairing;

grow peace in my restless discontent and chaos;

grow patience in place of hurry and agitation;

grow kindness that overcomes my harsh severity;

grow goodness where I have selfish ambition;

grow gentleness that quiets my quick, sharp tongue;

grow faithfulness where I am wayward and fickle;

and grow self-control that’s stronger than my fleshly cravings,

for the glory of the Father and His Son, Amen.

When most folks think of greatness, they picture empires, parades, marble palaces, and men in robes giving orders from gilded thrones.

Rome had all that.

Caesar had power.
The Pharisees had prestige.
The merchants had money.

But tucked away in borrowed rooms, humble homes, and dusty streets… a quieter revolution was unfolding. No trumpets. No banners. Just bread, prayer, and broken people finding hope.

They were called “the followers of the Way” (Acts 9:2).
And history would come to know them as the first Church.

Now these people had no marketing plan. No building fund. No political influence. Just a handful of fishermen, former tax collectors, widows, servants, and skeptics who had seen something the world could not explain—a risen Savior.

A few nights ago, I had a couple of hours of awake time.  What flooded my thoughts was “opposites.”  The constant stream of information revealing the chaos, confusion, perversion of reality and for many of us, the disappearance of common sense that has infected our nation and the world.  For now, I want to focus on the USA because our problem is a spiritual one and therefore directly involves God and satan!  You can’t get any more opposite than that.

No matter how dark and gloomy things are, Jesus can turn things around in an instant. When you’ve been going through a trial and weariness is weighing you down, it’s tempting to become negative and angry. The enemy loves to remind us how bad things are. He wants us to be consumed with despair. The good news is that hopelessness and glory cannot coexist!

Stir up your praise and find things to be thankful for. Dance around the room and do the opposite of what melancholy wants you to do. Shake off heaviness and become fascinated with Jesus. I hear the Lord saying over you this week,

For the enemy has overplayed his hand against you in this season.

He has overplayed his hand and revealed all of his cards right before your eyes.

His playbook is open.

His jig is up because now you see clearly why you have been a threat in this past season.

In the last year September to September there has been an assignment of such opposition against your calling, your life, your voice, your family, and your finances that the enemy didn’t expect you to get up from the onslaught.

Wilderness. It is the place where the God of glory meets with the barren soul, showing us the deepest lessons of our lives. How we need the wilderness seasons to teach us more of God’s ways.

The truth of the wilderness is a strange truth to most of us. Why would God actually lead us into a wilderness? Our heavenly Leader will sometimes take us to a place where we are limited, walled in, and hindered from going forward. This is the first wilderness the Hebrews had to pass through between them and their promised land, and so will we. It is the wilderness of Shur.
